In the second half of the Tunbridge Wells Tournament last week, the Grosvenor triple of Simon Watson, Lionel Hanmore and Norman Barton unfortunately lost out to eventual winners Brian Simmons, Dave Hayward and Terry Prince of Tonbridge on a challenging rink at Culverden Bowls Club.
The winning Tonbridge triple beat Jon Broomfield, Brian Chalklin and Trevor Russell, also of Tonbridge BC in the final.
The pairs competition didn't go so well for our 4 Grosvenor pairs, with only Norman Barton and Simon Watson making it past the first round. However, they did extremely well and lost to the last bowl of their quarter final. An excellent effort!
The winners of the pairs competiton were Keith Blackman (Southend) and Dave McCathie (Essex County), beating Phil Boddy (the Grove) and Eric Rogers (Calverley).
Graham Bridges played in the singles final on Saturday afternoon against Jon Broomfield from Tonbridge BC. Graham found himself trailing for most of the match but made a spirited comeback, while one shot from defeat! He managed to draw level at 20-20 and the shot changed hands multiple times on the final end, but with his final bowl, Jon Broomfield drew shot bowl for a well-earned victory. Congratulations, Jon, and commiserations, Graham, but it was an exciting final to watch and Grosvenor has had much to be proud of this tournament!
This week, Jo Cartwright went to the National Championships in Leamington Spa to compete in the two-wood singles competition. She won her first round match against a lady from Wiltshire, reaching the last 32 in the country, but lost to a lady from Somerset in the next round. A good effort to reach the Nationals, Jo.
Lastly, some sad news to report. On Saturday 10th August, Grosvenor member Barry Wise passed away. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with Shirley at this difficult time.
