TW Tournament - Wednesday

Wednesday morning saw the semi-finals of the singles competition, watched by a good sized crowd at Culverden BC. Keith Blackman (Southend) v Graham Bridges (Grosvenor) and Jon Broomfield (Tonbridge) v Duncan Hanmore (Borough Green).

Jon Broomfield raced into an early lead against Duncan, and the former Grosvenor player never quite managed to get back into the game, despite some dominant ends. Broomfield held his nerve and finshed the match by taking the jack into the ditch to pick up the two shots he needed.

Keith Blackman v Graham Bridges was an altogether slower-paced game, with some excellent drawing on a tricky rink. After a close start to the match, Graham gradually edged into the lead and continued to stretch the gap. Congratulations, Graham!

Singles final on Saturday, time TBA:

Graham Bridges (Grosvenor) v Jon Broomfield (Tonbridge BC)

In the evening, the triples competition continued with the two Grosvenor triples meeting at The Grove. With former winners Stuart Moaby, Steve Jenner and Graham Bridges the favourites on paper, it was a slight surprise for spectators to see Simon Watson, Lionel Hanmore and Norman Barton six shots up with two ends to play. With the defending champions holding five shots on the 17th end, Norman did well to affect a 'no end', but on the replayed end still dropped a 4, leaving his triple two shots ahead going into a nervy final end. Graham's triple held two shots, which they needed to tie the match, but with his last bowl, Norman drew the shot, sealing his team's win. What a game! Well done to all our Grosvenor players!

Simon, Lionel and Norman will play the semi-final against Brian Simmons's triple at Culverden on Thursday at 5.45pm.

Thursday morning sees the start of the pairs competition. Simon Watson and Norman Barton have received a walkover, and so will play a second round match at 2pm at Culverden.

Meanwhile at 9.30am at The Grove, Keith Morgan & Chris Tapp, Stuart Moaby & Graham Bridges, and Lionel Hanmore & Steve Jenner will be first round matches. Good luck to all of them!
